Jason Pitre is the owner of Bayou Rosa Oysters, a Native-owned oyster farm in South Louisiana. A proud member of the United Houma Nation, Jason was inspired to bring oyster farming to his family after seeing the method while working as a travel nurse in California. When the BP oil spill and coastal erosion brought an end to his grandfather’s wild harvest days, Jason helped transition the family’s operation to sustainable aquaculture, preserving a tradition that had been in the family and tribe for generations. Alongside running the farm, Jason continues to work as an ICU nurse. Through Bayou Rosa, he celebrates Houma heritage and the enduring connection between people and water.
